Erasmus Mundus 2027: How to Apply for a Fully Funded Master's in Europe, Step by Step

Erasmus Mundus 2027: How to Apply for a Fully Funded Master's in Europe, Step by Step

Erasmus Mundus is a fully funded master's in Europe, but there is no central application portal and no single deadline. You apply to each programme directly on its own website, usually between October and January, about a year before the programme starts. If you begin your research in December, you are already late for most programmes.

This article is the written companion to our video on Erasmus Mundus 2027, step by step. It covers what Erasmus Mundus really is, the three EU-wide eligibility rules, the right order of work, and a free fillable tracker.

The short answer

  • What it is: a one-to-two-year joint master's offered by a group (consortium) of universities, studied in two or three European countries.

  • What it pays: scholarship holders have tuition waived and receive a living stipend of up to €1,400 a month, set by a fixed EU formula.

  • How to apply: no central portal. Shortlist from the official EACEA catalogue, then apply to each programme on its own website.

  • When: mostly October to January for programmes starting the following autumn. Start in August or September.

What is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master?

An Erasmus Mundus Joint Master is a one-to-two-year master's degree offered jointly by a consortium of universities. If you are selected, you study in two or three European countries during a single degree, and at the end you receive a joint degree or multiple degrees.

For scholarship holders, tuition is waived, and the living stipend follows a fixed EU formula of up to €1,400 a month. The stipend is meant to cover your travel, visa and living costs.

It is competitive, but it is not out of reach: Pakistani students have been among the most successful applicants in recent selection rounds.

Is there a central Erasmus Mundus application portal?

No. This is the point that confuses students the most. There is no single portal and no single deadline. Each programme runs its own application on its own website, with its own deadline.

Two myths to clear up early:

  • There is no EU-wide CGPA requirement.

  • There is no EU-wide IELTS score.

Each consortium sets its own requirements. That is why you find the programme first, and then read its requirements.

Who is eligible for Erasmus Mundus?

Three EU-wide rules apply to every Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship:

  1. A bachelor's degree, or final year. You need a bachelor's honours degree, or you must be in your final year. Final-year students can apply with a preliminary transcript or an expected-graduation letter, but the degree must be completed before the master's starts. If you are in your final year, you can apply now.

  2. No previous award. If you have held an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship before, you cannot apply again.

  3. The mobility rule. You must complete study periods in at least two different countries. You cannot do the whole degree living in one country. This rule is non-negotiable: travelling across Europe and joining several academic communities is the whole point of the programme.

These are the minimum, not the full list. Each programme adds its own requirements on top: an English test, a specific academic background, documents and sometimes work experience. Do not rely on generic forum advice: read your programme's official page.

How do you apply to Erasmus Mundus, step by step?

Get the order right and you plan your application around the deadlines instead of chasing them.

  1. Shortlist from the official EACEA catalogue. It is the only authoritative list: if a programme is not there, it is not part of Erasmus Mundus. Shortlist by field first and choose countries and universities after. Programme names often do not describe the content, so read the curriculum, check the partner universities and the mobility track, and confirm that scholarships are offered for your intake.

  2. Contact your referees early. In Pakistan this is the most underestimated timeline risk. Give each referee your CV, your shortlist and each programme's priorities, and set their deadline two weeks before yours. Share a list of relevant projects they can mention, so the letter is specific, not generic.

  3. Prepare your documents. Transcripts, degree, attestation and translations. Students lose weeks on paperwork, not on merit, so move document tasks to the top of your list to avoid delays outside your control.

  4. Write one motivation letter per programme. Find each consortium's published selection priorities and answer them directly. Clean grammar no longer sets you apart, because anyone can write with AI. Your specific experience and motivation do: why this course, why these universities, why you.

  5. Submit early. Portals are busy on the last day and deadlines are not extended for anyone. Keep a simple tracker (programme, deadline, documents, status) and update it every week.

A timeline for the 2027 intake

  • August to September: shortlist programmes and contact referees.

  • September to October: documents, attestation and your English test.

  • October to December: motivation letters, one per programme.

  • October to January: submit, well before each deadline.

These are typical months. Your programmes' own published dates always win.

Your next steps

FAQ

Is Erasmus Mundus fully funded?

Is there one Erasmus Mundus application portal?

No. There is no central portal and no single deadline. You apply to each programme directly on its own website.

When do Erasmus Mundus applications open?

Most programmes accept applications between October and January for programmes that start the following autumn. Each programme publishes its own dates, so check its official page.

What CGPA or IELTS score do I need for Erasmus Mundus?

There is no EU-wide CGPA requirement and no EU-wide IELTS score. Each consortium sets its own requirements, so read each programme's official page.

Can final-year students apply for Erasmus Mundus?

Yes. Final-year students can apply with a preliminary transcript or an expected-graduation letter, as long as the degree is completed before the master's starts.

What is the Erasmus Mundus mobility rule?

You must complete study periods in at least two different countries during the degree. You cannot complete the whole degree in one country.
